Club Meeting Minutes

Minutes Black Mountain Democratic Club

2/21/24

PRESENT: @26 IN-PERSON

Our Social Gathering was held from 6:30-7:00 PM followed by the general meeting. And the General Meeting, began at 7:00 PM. Lee Finney, BMDC President, welcomed everyone, then led the flag salute and Preamble.

BMDC PRESIDENT COMMENTS:

  • The primary is March 5th. Make sure you complete your ballot and get it in prior to that date.
  • Thus far the club has endorsed Brian Maienschein for city attorney, Darshana Patel for assembly district 76, Terra Lawson-Remer for county board of supervisors District 5, Marni von Wilpert for city council District 5, and Sabrina Bazzo for SDUSD school board district A.
  • The GoTeam has been walking, distributing the party’s doorhangers for the primary. Our roster has been seriously diminished and we have a couple of very important races that we could play a part in: Terra’s run for re-election to the county board of supervisors and Sabrina’s run for re-election to the SDUSD school board.

TRESURER REPORT: Treasurer Claudia von Wilpert was absent, so Lee Finney gave the treasury report. The club’s current total funds on-hand is $1695. And he stated that the majority of the funds will go to support the campaigns of candidates in our priority races.

MEMBERSHIP REPORT: VP of Club Development Joan Raphael reported that we currently have 55 members. There were no new members at the meeting.

PROGRAM:

VP Tiffany Cuellar introduced each candidate (or their representative) seeking endorsement and allowed each to speak for up to three minutes in the following order:

  • Jackson Redelander spoke for Sara Jacobs Congressional District 51 (Friendly Endorsement)
  • Rachel Granadino spoke for Chris Ward Assembly District 78 (Friendly Endorsement)
  • Kevin Juza Assembly District 75
  • Joy Frew Assembly District 75
  • Gina Jacobs SD County Board of Supervisors District 2
  • Gina Jacobs spoke for Jodi Cleesattle Superior Court Judge Seat 43 and Koryn Sheppard Superior Court Judge Seat 51

The candidates or their representatives stepped outside to give the BMDC voting members time to complete their ballots. The ballots were collected and tallied by Joan Raphael and Sarah Spear-Barrett. Candidates or their reps were called back in, and Tiffany Cuellar announced the results. All the candidates except Joy Frew received BMDC’s endorsement.

Steve Gelb, San Diego +350, addressed the club. He spoke about the need to replace SDGE with a city-managed utility company. He also spoke about an effort to overturn AB1137 (prohibits oil drilling within 3200 feet of public schools) and that we must oppose this.

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, March 13, 2024, 6:30 PM social time and 7 PM meeting and will be on Zoom.

Respectfully Submitted,

Marcia Finney
